Welcome back to Day 2 of Yo Joe June! I thought since day one spotlighted my latest GI Joe artwork, today we'd visit my first GI Joe artwork! And it's not even a Joe! Which, if you know me, is kind of surprising because I tend to favor the good guys.
Yo Joe June, Day 2: Cobra Commander by Eddy Newell!
This is from the days when my friends and I would travel to local conventions and collect sketches from whatever artists we thought were cool. We relied largely on if we were familiar with their work or if we had seen them at a previous convention. The internet wasn't always the wealth of info we rely on today! Eddy was from the same general area as us, so we saw him at a lot of the same cons.
Eddy's a cool guy, super down to Earth and everyone loved his ink wash tones and how moody they were. I didn't have a GI Joe sketchbook at this time, not even another GI Joe sketch! But based on what I knew of Eddy's work, I thought he'd do a good job on Cobra Commander! And he did a great job!
Looking back, I'm a little surprised I didn't go with Snake Eyes, only because I think Eddy would have done a fantastic job with him, too. But I have no regrets about this one! Eddy delivered a badass looking Commander who doesn't look like he's here to play games!
And most importantly, this remarkable sketch got me thinking about what other cool GI Joe sketches I could get, down the road. This eventually led to my GI Joe themed sketchbook! We'll talk about that, soon!
Thanks for checking in for Day 2 of Yo Joe June!
Stop back tomorrow to see who's in the spotlight for Day 3!
