Yo Joe June!

I'm gonna try something new here. It's been on my mind for a while to find a way to discuss some of the original artwork from my collection. Everything is posted on Comic Art Fans (Which, if you aren't familiar with Comic Art Fans and you're even a casual fan of comic book art, you need to check it out!) and it's been recommended that I do some kind of online post but I really don't know anything about making those kinds of videos. So, here we are! I'm gonna give this a try and see how it goes!

Since this post is titled, Yo Joe June, you may have put together that I'm starting out with GI Joe art. I have to admit, there's more than a few pieces in my collection so I'm gonna start with the newest addition to my collection and see where the month takes us!

Yo Joe June, Day 1: Frostbite by Brian Shearer!

I first became aware of Brian Shearer through comic book artist, Robert Atkins but that's a story for another day! Brian has a number of credits, including his own creator-owned series, which you can learn more about at www.brian-shearer.com! I'm mostly familiar with Brian's work on Transformers and of course, GI Joe! Brian is part of the longest running creative teams on GI Joe, along with Larry Hama and Shannon Gallant!

You can find Brian on most social media but lately he's been doing some live drawing on Whatnot (brian_shearer). During these live shows, Brian chats with fans and draws for them! You buy a sketch and then Brian draws it live for you, right there! And here's a little secret, it can be just about any character you like, it doesn't even have to be GI Joe! Not that I follow that rule!

Case in point, our pal, Frostbite, here! As a kid, I collected GI Joe with a vengeance! I was a pretty big fan of the Snow Cat, the vehicle Frostbite drove and came with.

The Snow Cat had tires, treads, a "frosted" canopy, a windshield wiper and missiles on skis! Frostbite looked cool enough with his winter uniform and rifle with a giant scope but he didn't really show up in the cartoon or the comic book much. This kind of limited my attachment to him but I would still mark him down in the Like column!

My current focus for GI Joe art is to try to get most of the "main" characters from creators who've worked on GI Joe. Brian Shearer is definitely one of those creators and I have a few pieces from him. So, last week while I was watching Brian ink up a cool sketch for someone else on Whatnot, my wheels were turning on who I would get. When he finished the other piece, I made my move and requested Frostbite! Even though he wasn't an A-lister, he still looked cool and I thought Brian would do a great job of depicting him. Brain did more than that, there's so much personality in this sketch, I love it! On top of that, the white charcoal pencil and white-out snow really stand out on the toned paper!

Like I mentioned above, Brian is so much fun to watch! Once he gets started, he dives right in! I swear it's like he already has the entire thing mapped out, even though he never knows what or who he's going to be asked to draw! And watching him ink and change the thickness of a line with just a slight change of his wrist, is something else!

My thanks to Brian Shearer for the awesome sketch! And my thanks to you, for checking out my blog and Yo Joe June!
