Star-Spangled Sketches: Team America!

I couldn't celebrate a theme titled, Star-Spangled Sketches and not include Team America!

You probably aren't familiar with Team America, the Marvel Comic only made it 12 issues but since it's one of the books I started collecting as a kid, and they 100% were running around the Marvel Universe,  I had to include them! The good news for you is, I don't have much Team America art to share!

Let's start with the fact that Team America first appeared in the pages of Captain America! They also appeared in New Mutants and the Thing! And they had guest appearances by Iron Man, Ghost Rider and they fought Hydra!

Look at those Covers! Look at those Uniforms! These guys were more Star-Spangled then Captain America and GI Joe put together!

As far as sketches, I just have this one, of the Marauder! He's beyond cool and mysterious but also the most un-Star-Spangled of the group.

The Marauder by Ron Frenz!

I do also have these 2 pages from Team America issue 5, pages 10 and 15. Pencils by Alan Kupperburg and Inks by Vince Colletta. They do nicely spotlight Honcho's Team America racing suit!

I don't know that you were expecting Team America to make an appearance during my Star-Spangled Sketches but I'm glad I had this chance to share Team America with you!

Star-Spangled Sketches: Captain America's Allies!

I had this great idea for a post of some of Captain America's friends and others who've been Captain America but clearly I wasn't sure what to call it! Anyway, here we are to enjoy some more Star-Spangled Sketches from the Captain America corner of the universe!

Several characters have taken a turn as Captain America, some in other realities or stories of alternate futures, some in the very Marvel Universe. Today, we're just going to enjoy a few of them.

USAgent by Mike McKone!

Star-Spangled Sketches: Captain America!

 Happy Independence Day!

There's no way I could have a post called Star-Spangled Sketches and Not include Captain America! There are some symbolic super heroes and costumes out there but I don't know any that rival Captain America and his symbolism!

I'm not sure there's much else that needs said about Captain America, so we'll move onto the Star Spangled Sketches!

Captain America by Gene Gonzales!

Captain America by Cliff Chiang!

Captain America by Andy MacDonald!

Captain America by Darryl Banks!

Captain America by Mike Perkins!

Captain America by Chris Giarrusso!

Captain America and Bucky by Chris Sprouse!

I may have gotten a little carried away with Cap but there's so many great ones! Plus, his entire outfit is Star Spangled!

Check back tomorrow for some more Captain America "related' sketches!

Star-Spangled Sketches: Nuke!

From the pages of DareDevil came the super soldier we didn't know existed but he become one of my all-time favorite characters, Nuke! I mean, you did see this blog is called, Nuke's Comic Art Bunker, right?

Created to protect our nation and it's citizens, Nuke was a product of the government's attempt to recreate Captain America and his Super Soldier Serum. Instead, Nuke became a weapon, used by the government and those who manipulate it (The Kingpin. I'm talking about the Kingpin).

First of all, if you've never read DareDevil Born Again by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, I'm not here to judge you. Just go find a copy and read it, now! I've never been the biggest DareDevil fan but I've enjoyed some great DareDevil stories and this is at the top of that list! It's also where we were first introduced to Nuke!

Nuke has encountered Captain America, since they're sort of two different sides of a coin but Nuke's story didn't end well. However, Nuke must have proven popular because he's been brought back and his story changed, retconned and manipulated, just like the super soldier himself! The poor guy just wanted to rescue POWs and protect Americans but his handlers kept him hoped up on his reds, whites and blue pills, Nuke just never had a chance. Thankfully, Captain America has gotten through to him but it never seems to matter.

I actually don't have as many sketches of Nuke as I'd like but I'm working on that!

Nuke by Lee Weeks!

 Nuke by Ron Salas!

Nuke by Drew Moss!

Nuke by Chris Giarrusso!

Heading into the 4th of July, have fun, stay safe and don't forget...

Star-Spangled Sketches: Super Patriot!

Happy July 2nd and Welcome back for more of my Star-Spangled Sketches!

Today we visit an often forgotten character from the early days of Image Comics, Super Patriot! How could we not include someone named Super-Patriot in our Star-Spangled Celebration!

Super-Patriot's story started off familiar, he was a WWII soldier who was experimented on (this time by the Nazis), gained super powers and became the Super Patriot! In the "modern era" the more vicious bad guys, attacked him and left him for dead, a shady company saved his life, turning him into a cyborg and he jumped back into action as the all-new, Super Patriot!

I enjoyed Super Patriot even though he didn't get used a ton. He had two limited series and showed up in several titles, including the Savage Dragon, which makes sense since he was created by Erik Larsen. I always thought he was a fun take on several basic origin ideas and his ability to shape shift his cybernetic parts into weapons, always looks cool!

I have 2 sketches of Super Patriot. I should probable try to get one from Dave Johnson or Erik Larsen.

Super Patriot by Scott James!

Super Patriot by Chris Campana!

GI Joe A Real American Hero rocketed onto the scene in the early 1980s when patriotism was at a definite height! GI Joe captured the hearts and minds of children and parents alike! I mean it's subtitle was, A Real American Hero!
